The Guanacaste province has a rich "wild western" flavor and it is reflected in the spirit and vitality of its people. The people living here have ties to old bloodlines of the Chorotega Indians. Some locals have managed to keep one of their ancient arts alive; the art of making pottery in the same fashion of 1000 years ago. As you travel around you will still see real life Costa Rican cowboys (Vaqueros), herds of cattle milling around the roads, the original oxcarts still in use, and you are able attend the traditional fiestas with rodeos.
Guanacaste is the driest of all the provinces in Costa Rica. Temperatures near the coasts and on the beaches range between 70-90F (21-32C), while its heated plains, plateaus and rolling hills lie golden dry from Dec–June; thus named the “dry season”. During July-Oct, the green season, the parched land springs to life and displays an enormous variety of lush vegetation, and a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors. The northern and central pacific beaches of this region are among the most beautiful in the country and it is here where you'll find miles of isolated pristine beaches. Travelers visiting many of Costa Rica's National Parks will find more than 12 ecosystems; all of which produce some of the richest flora and fauna found on the planet.
Playa Negra is located 32 kilometers east of Santa Cruz; a 30 minute drive south of Tamarindo, 1.5 hours from Liberia and 4 hours from San Jose. Walking the miles of endless beaches entice you to explore neighboring towns and the local culture. The beaches in this area are some of the prettiest and desolate in Costa Rica and make for fantastic morning walks and sea shell gathering. Horse back riding can be arranged along the beaches and into the estuaries. Golfing, off shore fishing, kayaking, sunset sailing, in-home massages, yoga classes and day spas are all nearby. If you tire of the beach life and heat, the national parks offer rain forests, volcanoes, natural springs, canopy tours and are within a 2-4 hour drive.
Are you looking for some “night life”? Tamarindo is a 30 minute drive away and is where you'll find bright lights and a variety of bars, live music and discos open all night. In the months of December and Jan, and again in March and April there are regional rodeos in many of the surrounding towns where you can enjoy the local flavor of bull riding, horse riding and fiestas. It's an unforgettable experience participating in these huge community events. Soccer is the national sport and there is a soccer field in every town and local games occur just about every weekend.
Should you not wish to venture out and enjoy the Costa Rica ambience, you can rest and relax in the solitude of your own deck with views over the ocean and enjoy the “pura vida” lifestyle.
